crossover cable connections

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I was advised that the simplest way to share our broadband connection with a second computer was to use a 'crossover' cable. BUT now I have one of these only to find that the second computer (our older one) does not seem to have a socket that fits!!
Does anyone know if you can get adapters or something and if so what are they called??

What you need is a standard 10/100 Network card. It is an expansion card that you plug inside the computer

They go for about £3 on eBay :)
 
a crossover cable is plugged into a network card (as mega said) but you actually need 2 10 / 100 network cards (one plugged into each of the computers you want to network)
don't worry these card can be found cheaply and usually plug into PCI slots inside the computer (don't worry their dead easy to put in) but one thing to remember is if you don't have an anti static strap then just touch an exposed metal part of you computers case every minute of so, while playing inside your computer
 
You may run into some problems when directly connecting clients using Windows. IP address problems may arise as you'll have to configure Internet Connection Sharing to share the connection with the second computer, and sometimes this doesn't work.

If that fails, then you may want to consider buying a cheap wired router. Thats actually the simplest and easiest way to do it, as the IP addresses are assigned automatically by the router, and your modem will connect to te router. But try the direct connection first.
