I just assembled my computer - all new parts.
It worked sporadically enough for me to get Windows and some drivers and other utilites installed, then the Mobo went tits-up.
Should I format the drives and start from scratch or can I just assemble with the new mobo and hit the ground running.

Thanks for the help... this is a kick butt forum!

[ot]How do you say tits-up in Singapore?[/ot]

    AAAAnyway......
yes you will need to re-instal windows.

I had the same :swear: thing.
You can always try but most likely that your system will not load windows.
Something to do with components set-up and the registry, I think....:O

By the way, welcome to the forum!

Depends on the motherboard. If it's got the same chipset, then yes, you can get by just fine---although with the sporadic nature, it's probably worth the extra hour or two to do a clean install.

The reason for a reinstall with a motherboard switch is due to the storage controller. Changing the storage controller out from under the hard drive without installing the new controller first (which is do-able, but not with two separate motherboards) is like taking a Zulu from his home, dropping him in the middle of New York City and having him ask for directions back home. He doesn't 'know the language' and is confused.

Same thing with Windows. You can get around the whole reinstall by installing the OS over itself, but unless you've got some data on the drive that you need (if you've got a motherboard with a different chipset on it than the dead one) reinstall for best results.
