Hi folks, I have a Compaq Presario with a 170 gig hard drive of which I'm using 27 gigs. It's running a 3500+ AMD Sempron. I don't generally reboot unless I have to. It just stays on. The last few months I have noticed that there is a delay from the time I click on anything until the desired action takes place. Kind of irritating this is. It doesn't happen right after a reboot. I just doubled the ram to 3 gigs but it made no difference. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this?
Welcome to HWF You might need to perform some maintenance: 1. Defragment the hard drive. Right-click on a partition in My Computer and choose Properties. Then go to the tab Tools and choose Defragmentation. Then click on Defragment. 2. Perform a Disk Cleanup. At the properties screen of the selected partition, choose Disk Cleanup to clean all temporary files. 3. Scan your computer for spyware (Spybot S&D preferred).
Thank you. Yes, I have already done all of those things, several times. It didn't help. The security software runs every 24 hours.
Do you have antivirus running in the background? Is there any process that's taking up more CPU time than it should?
Yup. The antivirus runs in the background. Other than that just the browsers and the tabs on each that I always have minimized. I use some software that sucks resources but I usually close out of it when a task is done. Right after I reboot the machine works like it should. As the days pass it gets more and more sticky. I suppose the easy answer would be to just reboot it every day, but the point is it never used to do this. It's like it's "leaking" resources.
Hmmmm ... I might have found the culprit. All the 3D screen savers were corrupted. I changed to a standard. We'll see what happens by tomorrow.
