    Hi,

I've been struggling with this problem since a long time now. I went through the basic checklist of hardware issues and couldn't come up with an affirmative for any of the cases. The computer didn't have any of those signs.

I run Linux most of the time (Linux ashesh-Studio-1555 2.6.38-16-generic #67-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 6 17:58:38 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and sometimes log into Windows 7 for multimedia work.

The problem started when my laptop fan failed. I got it replaced immediately and didn't use the laptop at all while the fan didn't work. Ever since then, the laptop's lid switch stopped working - closing the lid isn't recognized at all. The fan works now and the laptop remains decently cool.

The other problem is that the laptop now randomly shuts down. It happens more often on Linux and less often on Windows, but it does happen. The pattern is absolutely random - it sometimes happens right after booting up, so overheating is ruled out. It sometimes doesn't happen for several hours. It sometimes happens when the computer resumes from sleep and I press a few keys. It even happens on some random key presses.

I've taken the laptop to some repair shops, gotten the motherboard cleaned, ran a memtest, everything. It hasn't helped. And before I hand it over to someone else for repairs, I might as well try to fix it myself.

Can anyone tell me what the problem might be? I'm stuck here. I'm uploading the detailed memory/cpu specs in a file with this thread.

Has this ever done this With One OS installed ? Have you tried removing the Battery and running on AC power Only ? This could be a number of things..
Motherboard could be going bad, Hard drive/ A bad ram chip.. And Also a Short somewhere..
