Win7 Ultimate x86 here. Recently I installed a couple of programs. Some of these churned up an error when I try to run them (WerFault.exe). After disabling Windows Error Reporting, an error message was received; "problem has caused program to stop working correctly". Not too helpful, but still something. Some others have had success with adding these to the Data Execution Prevention exception list, but this would mean I have to manually add the .exe of many of the apps I use (very tedious). So I tried using command prompt command: c:\windows\system32 bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff in console with elevated rights. Returned a success message and rebooted. Now almost all apps cannot work and throw up "problem has caused program to stop working correctly" error. Even cmd cannot work. This means I cannot enter AlwaysOn command and return things to normal. System Restore set to store only most recent point which is beyond when I changed DEP settings. No go. Safe mode with command prompt. No go. Recovery console (with admin rights) turns up error also. Any ideas? Perhaps some other way to edit the bcdedit file to restore DEP functionality? Cheerio, Nicholas.
Recently installed was Trainz Simulator 2010 and ProEngineer 4. Both fail with this error: Those that are now also failing used to work perfectly before DEP was disabled; DiRT 2, Counter-Strike, Internet Explorer 8, CMD, GDI+. Doesn't seem to be a problem with the apps, just need to restart DEP.
Have only tried cmd.exe so far, both with and without Admin rights. Safe mode, safe mode with command prompt all don't work. Recovery console cmd works but I cannot get the command to execute successfully. Windows Update ran last night, installed them and shut down. Started up just now, stuck at "Configuring, 0%", failed. So, Update doesn't work as well.
In windows 7, DEP is very important. On startup, keep hitting F8 (you want the Advanced boot options menu) and try "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". also, if you have the disk, try repairing the BCD (this replaced boot.ini). they command you ran changed this file, repairing it should fix it. select repair my pc ( or use the command prompt if its working) , then command prompt. try "BootRec.exe /fixboot" and "BootRec.exe /RebuildBcd" this may help.
