Detection of External HDD in bios not happening,Need help !

I am using the dell inspiron 5520, windows 7 os 64 bit, I want to change the boot sequence to the newly bought external hdd,but i do not see the external hdd in the list when i go to the bios screen to change the boot sequence.
Step by step guidance and quick response would be highly appreciated ,
thanks a lot in advance.
 
Is this external drive plugin by USB ? I don't think that is possible to do.. Most computers / Laptops Must boot from internal hard drive..Mostly because it won't find the USB drive on Start-up..

Yes this external hdd is SEAGATE BACKUP PLUS DESKTOP PLUS 4TB. So you are saying it can just be used to store files nothing else can be done right ?
 
Yea! You will have to use it for storage, I am pretty sure your won't be able to install an OS on the drive and boot from it..BUT you can try to do to see what happens..
Does your laptop have a place in it's Bios where it says you can boot from USB ?
 
no I am not able to do it, booting from USB does not come up when i use this seagate hdd but booting from a sandisk flash drive gets detected in the bios screen.
so is it like possible to install the os to the seagate hdd using the sandisk flash drive ?

Ok, Do You have an OPTION in the Bio's that says Boot from USB ? You can try to install your OS from the scandisk drive, But when you are done, How are you going to but from external drive ? What is it you are trying to do ? It sounds like you what to run Two Operating Systems ... Is this right ?

YES the option boot from usb comes up only when i use the sandisk 16gb flash drive, but when i connect the seagate backup plus it does not give me the option to boot from usb or external drive or whatever.. Yes i am trying to install operating system into the seagate so tht i can use it on other computer at home. hope i made myself clear.

OK, What OS do you want to install on the external had drive ? Now your Problem is that you need the OS to be in an ISO.file .. This way you can put it on the external Hard drive, then Burn it to DVD and install it to the other Computer..

I want to install the OS in the seagate hdd. so i can use it in my current laptop as well as the other computer,want to install ubuntu. using the seagate hdd is not possible at all right ?
 
NO ! this is not possible.. For One it will not boot.. For this to work, You will have to split your Internal hard drive in half, Then you could install Linux on the second Partition.
You can use the external Hard drive for storage..

Hey i updated my bios as i approached the dell guys, now i see options like LEGACY mode, UEFI mode, which one should i choose to make the hdd recognizeable. i approached the seagate guys they said it can be used as a bootable device.
Now can you help me further ?
 
Once again ! If there is No spot in the Bios's that says Boot from USB, This is not going to work..Your computer Boots to C: drive by Default..
So, Unless you have a Boot Manager and your computer allows you to boot from USB then IT will not Work.. The Only way I you can have a dual boot system is to use the same hard drive in the laptop, You will have to split the hard drive into to Partitions, Thus have one for Windows and the other for Linux.
When you install Linux it will put a Boot manager on the Hard drive, Thus giving you the option to boot into Windows Or Linux.. BUT To boot from an External drive , I don't think it is possible With a Laptop..
