Device cannot start (code 10)

I bought a second hand working PCI Video Card (S3 ViRGE/DX) to use with my secondary LCD screen.

After installing it and navigating to the device manager I see that it displays this message:

Device cannot start (code 10)

I looked on the microsfot kbase and it suggested to assign a different IRQ.

So I went into the CMOS and changed the IRQ from 15 to 9. I then received a blue screen error after entering my log on password.

Blue screen message displayed: NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

So I changed it to a different IRQ again and I no longer received the blue screen, but it is still displaying. Device cannot start (code 10)

Also the mouse went laggy after the IRQ was changed the second time. So at the moment I have removed the card.


I have received this same error when attempting to install a secondary video card on another machine some time ago, I don’t think I resolved it then either.

Also received this same error on a sound card at one point.

Do you have any info on why this error message is caused or how to resolve it?

Any help is appreciated.

Well, this happens ussually when there's IRQ conflicts. Best solution is to try swapping the firewire card to another PCI slot. ussually it helps.

you can also try to force XP to reinstall the drivers for the card again. Just remove it from the list of hardware devices.

also check to see if there's another hardware that have that same problem (IRQ conflict)
or Alternatively check the BIOS for APIC Function. Enable it. That will give each of your device its own IRQ (or as many as they need!). :)

While searching the net I come across some more information....

"If this happens, make sure that you have uninstalled all previous video card drivers. Also, make sure that the motherboard chipset drivers have been installed and that the new video card is located by itself on IRQ 10 or 11. Note: In Win XP, the card may be assigned to an IRQ higher than 15. This is OK as long as its not sharing with other devices. There are several ways to potentially rearrange your IRQs if you experiencing problems that may caused by a hardware conflict with another device:

Option 1:Try changing the IRQ for the video card in the system BIOS. For information on how to do this, check with your motherboard or computer manufacturer.

Option 2:Make note of which slot each PCI device is installed in. Locate the driver CD for each PCI device in case you have to reinstall the driver. Physically remove all the PCI devices except the AGP card and boot up computer in windows. If the problem is fixed, re-install each device, one at a time, into a PCI slot thats different from the one it was originally in. Shuffle the cards around until you get our card to post on IRQ 10 or 11 by itself.

Option 3:You may also try to "load bios defaults values" or load setup default values" in your system bios."

aLi3nZ, go into the computer's BIOS and make sure the onboard graphics are disabled. If you do not know how to do this, please post for more information

Well! the main reason for me to type the info is to give some kind of idea and I believe my solution is providing a good idea.

Tell me if its not relevant(replace firmwire with his video card) to the problem stated by Ali3nz? or my solution doesnt fit with this problem?

Anyways I will take care of my searches better in the future. one more thing, Google is not the only search engine I use. There are some results which others provides better than google.

Do you have any meaning of this word karni or just type it to tease me?

Look, I don't want to turn this into a slinging match. But the way I feel is that anyone can use a search engine to find the answer. The reason somebody comes to this forum, is to discuss a problem with someone who actually knows how to solve it. Somebody who has been through the problem before and has found a fix. They do not come here to read several paragraphs of text that they could have found via Google. They want their support personalised to fit their exact computer problems.

I don't know, maybe I am wrong. But that's just the way I see it.
If I don't know the answer to something, I simply won't post in that thread. Instead of searching Google for it, I will wait for another member to post (who know's the solution) and learn from that. Do you actually read and learn from the text you find on Google?

Well yes and no. Obviously the firewire card had nothing to do with his problem whatsoever. Your Option 1 was a little vague, Option 2 puzzles me as he didn't mention the video card was PCI based and Option 3 is risky because it could screw up some other important system settings.

Now don't get me wrong, I think that it's great you are willing to give up your time to help others. But I know if it was me who was looking for help, i'd end up even more confused then I was before [/ot]

Look, I don't want to turn this into a slinging match. But the way I feel is that anyone can use a search engine to find the answer.

Everytime I google for something, I come across so many results and then I go through each closest result. I read through the whole posts and when I feel that particualar answer will meet the criteria then I post here. I dont think that everybody would like to go through so many results to find out the answer for their problem

Thats what I look over the internet, if there is anybody who come across the same/simillar problem. I go through their whole solutions and post the main solutions here which I find there.......If I think that whole page is worth reading then I just give them a link to go through as I did in your case when you asked for something to run in "Run". Didnt that gave you help?

No, you are not wrong. Its just the way you think which doesnt match my thinking completely. But I always like the way you have used. Tell the other person which is cousing conflicts in your mind. Otherwise it builds up and you feel underpressure(its my thinking and if you feel its wrong then dont worry).

Well, in my case....I dont want to wait for others because I want to solve the issue as soon as possible because I know when your computer is in trouble and you dont know the cure for it.

I dont know but its making sense to me..... He didnt even said the He doesnt not have a PCI card....

You will only get confused if you dont have a solutions to your problem otherwise you will try every possible solution available. Same thing will happen if other members post their replies and problem is still there. What do u say?


I would like to say that, dont get me wrong....I like the community over here and you are the one out of some, whom I respect and if you think I am doing something wrong, debate with me instead of just taking me wrong.
