Hi My Buffalo external HDD stopped working and does not power up any longer (neither with the original AC adapter nor with others). So I decided to open it up to try retrieving my data and it turned out to be a Toshiba DT01ACA100, a SATAIII type. Now I would like to connect it to my laptop with a USB to SATA adapter but I am not sure what I need to do with the power, given that the original buffalo board attached to the HDD had to be powered with 5V DC. Do I need to connect the Toshiba HDD also to power and if so how? Or will the power come from USB directly? Thanks in advance for any advice Teo
USB 2.0 offers only 2.5W. Certainly not enough for that Tohiba. Also, USB offers only 5V and Toshiba wants also 12V.
Thanks WM. Now that we established that's not possible to power via USB, is there anyway i can use the original power supplier, eg via adaptors available on the market? The HDD had a board attached to it with the USB and power connections. I detached the board from the HDD, assuming that the problem is the board itself. So now i need some kind of interface/adapter to provide USB connection from my laptop and power from the external power supplier. x70
Unless you have desktop PC available, you need something like that http://www.amazon.com/Syba-Device-Adapter-Cable-SY-ADA20079/dp/B0057UAB2K So SATA power AC, data transfer adapter to USB. Another option is enclosure like http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-3-5-I...ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1414338428&sr=1-6 Those are just examples. Your drive is regular SATA drive.
