DRAM frequency problem

Discussion in 'CPU, Motherboards and Memory' started by Random Person, Mar 16, 2011.

  1. Hello everyone.

Let me start off with my specs:
    MOBO: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (rev. 2.0)
    CPU: Intel i5 650 @ 3.2GHZ
Graphics card: Gigabyte GV-N98TSL-1GI (GeForce 9800 GT)
RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1333MHZ Dual Channel Kingston RAM
    PSU: 600W Huntkey HK600-53AP
    HDD: 200GB Maxtor 6B200M0 SATA
    Monitor: Iiyama PL2473HD (1920x1080@60Hz)

Now for my problem. I have DLed two programs, named Speccy and CPU-Z, to check out my exact specs. In both of the programs, it says that my RAM's frequency is only 666MHZ, instead of the 1333MHZ it's supposed to be. It does say that it's running in Dual Channel.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

If you go into your BIOS, you should be able to see what the system is currently running your memory at. I would trust the BIOS over those other tools. Usually the motherboard is good at automatically setting the Ram to the correct speed, but it should let you switch the settings manually. If you download a copy of the manual for your motherboard, it will tell you how to get into the BIOS and should describe how to change RAM speed/timings as well :)

  3. Ahhh.. I figured something out. It appears that the programs to show your specs (i.e. Speccy, CPU-Z) show your RAM's /true/ frequency, which in my case, is not 1333MHZ, but half of that, namely 666.7MHZ. The RAM sticks originally have a frequency of 666.7MHZ, but something in the mobo or processor, doubles this. I do not know why, but that's why manufacturers put the double frequency on the stick, instead of the original frequency, since this phenomenon always happens.
Thanks for the reply tho! :D
