I have an IBM Travelstar 2.5" hard drive that has files on it that need to be recovered. Somewhere in the processs of using a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter and a USB enclosure to connect it to a desktop, the drive stopped spinning. A forensics company would have no problem recovering the files but that would cost a fortune. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to diagnose the mechanical/electrical failure or how to get the data? Thank you!!
well, try another adapter for one (or stick it into another laptop just to see). also, you can take a simple adapter and try to hook it up to a big PCs IDE bus. Maybe te USB is broken and doesn't supply any power.
I think it is the drive's PCB. I am in the process of matching a sacrificial 'donor' drive so I can swap the board.
