Well a whole 8 months have passed since i last made a meaningful contribution. Everything has been running hunky doory, well until yesterday that is anyway. I dunno if its a sign or what. I thought id just go back on Warcraft again for a bit, so loaded her up and started downloading the patches. Everytime the download starts i get the same blue screen of death and the message 'Driver IRQL not less or equal too' then some other technical info which is just a series of numbers and letters. Then it says about dumping physical memory and thats about it. When typing the Driver IRQL.......phrase into google it comes back with a 100's of thousands of different solutions. I really don't fancy trying them all.
the only thing in the event viewer log is this warning message - This computer cannot accept Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) virtual private network (VPN) calls because it does not have an L2TP computer certificate installed. then went to microsoft technet to be bamboozled with computer jargon that i didn't understand. Found another warning message. Something along the lines of 'Your computer was unable to renew its address from the DHCP network, for the network card with network address '.............' The following error occurred - the operation was cancelled by the user. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address server. Does this mean owt, or nowt?
I received the dreaded IRQL Not Less Or Equal error once, it turned out that my hard drive had passed away.
Well i put what warning messages i had on event viewer, into google. The most likely cause of my Driver IRQL seems to be the driver for the D-Link Air 510 network card that i have. It seems that the said driver i have was a corrupt driver file released by D-link many moons ago. I can't find any newer drivers for it past the back end of 2004. The thing is there never seems to be a problem with it unless im downloading something and i happen to be away from my computer. Once im away for any length of time i get the blue screen of death.
D-Link DWL 510 and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - Jannis Hermanns' place found this interesting article which highlights the problem. The only thing is, what happens if you don't have the CD.
