Hi there,, sorry for any newbie annoyances.... since my frined installed windows xp pro for me my new toshiba dvd-rom sd-m1612 can't read blank cd's. i've tried different types but it always says Disc not formatted Windows cannot read from this disk. The disc might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows. but it reads and plays burned cd's and dvd's fine. It didn't used to say that and i happily burned things with nero burning. since discovering this problem i tried bits of several things on the net but nothings made any difference. I uninstalled and reinstalled nero but it could never recognise my dvd drive. so is at the mo not on my comp. i searched for PxHelp20.sys files to delete them but there were none. i searched for upper and lower filters but didn't delete them as i didn't know what i was doing. i tried downloading firmware from toshiba but it made no difference, file name TOSHV224.SYS and it installed through ms dos and deleted files and i went ahead as instructed but it has had no effect. i've always worked out problems through the net before but i am getting to my limit here as everyone is talking about firmware, or xp pro incompatibillities or regional codes or nero problems or driver updates but i am out of my depth here. thankyou very very much for any help before xp pro i used nero and burned happily. now nero wont recognise my dvd drive. i can play dvd's and burned cd's (mp3's or avi's etc) happily. isla peace and love.
Are you trying to burn a CD with the built-in Windows support? Your drive may have also had the laser start to go bad, and it simply coincided with your XP install.
HI there, thanks for your swift reply! Its a new drive and i had hardly used it before the reinstall, but enough to know it was working well. As soon as the reinstall it just says the message i quoted (in first post), this is what windows does with it. if i ignore that and try to use nero, nero won't even find the drive properly, so again that makes me think its not a laser thing. And it does read all other discs fine...what it feels like to me is that i don't have the right driver, or windows xp and this dvd drive have a compatilbility issue. or even that i need to reinstall the driver....i really am using terms i hardly understand but have found so many cases of whilst trying to find answers on the net. This seemed to be a common problem with a couple of differences but i couldn't understand the terminology and replies given...... thanks,...hope im not talking complete nonsense! isla (appreciate your patience)
