today on my brothers pc i was burning a bunch of avi files for him on 2 dvds and when the burning started it quickly aborted it and stoped then gave the message Illegal disc, i did some research couldnt really come up with what that really meant for me. People were saying different things but then i looked at his DVD cases and seen they were DVD-R not + which i always used and then i tried to burn somthing on my pc's dvd drive which is identicle to his with the DVD-R and it said the same thing illegal disc so whats the difference in the two formats i didnt know that modern dvd drives couldnt play - somtimes? or is there a way for me to use - dvds?

DVD-R are the most common discs used, +R aren't as widely supported on players, although all modern writers will be able to use them. +R is generally a slightly better format, although older players may have trouble with them.

yeah, as Addis said DVD - discs are supported by most modern players / drives, DVD + discs are supported by dual format drives (+ & -)[ot]personally i have a dual format drive[/ot]although i think most modern DVD players only support DVD - , however Dual Layer (DL) i think is only currently only available on DVDr and not RW (ReWritable) i'm not sure when DL RW discs are going to be available, i don't actually know what the physical difference between the disc format is, however, i don't think their like HDDs where the format of a partition can be changed, but i've never tried to format a DVD+ disc in the DVD- format or vice versa but i wouldn't have thought it was possible.
