Ok I need to setup a security system.

1. It needs to record for at least 7 hours a day.

2. It needs to be able to burn the events onto a DVD.

3. It needs to have sound recording and be in colour.

4. It needs to be manageble so I can burn it to DVD and play it back onto a DVD player.

I was thinking of using a Mini-itx PC with a version of linux, and a really good webcam and really good mic, and have it record to like a 120GB HDD and then I burn to DVD-DL, or something along them lines, but it's quite expencive and I need to save as much as possible on this.

Any other suggestions would be great because I don't think my idea is any good lol.

Thanks.

You might want to consider a microphone too then, but be careful... not everybody likes camera's, if its a common room (or similar) then perhaps you should consult others who use the room before you buy any hardware!

IMHO if you actually want to make a difference, do not cut corners.
These things are very sensitive. There is the privacy act to conceder and before you can confront people, you need to make sure you have very strong, reliable evidence. You will not get these with a schysse webcam and desktop mic. I would strongly recommend involving a security firm who will install a proper CCTV surveillance system.
