enable bidirectional support in printer

Hi
Can anyone explain about enable bidirectional support check box in printer .
you can see this check box in:
right click on printer, click printer properties ,ports tab, enable bidirectional support check box

if dont mark this checkbox what is lost?
and why in some cases it is possible to disable(gray)?
