Hello all, I know this is a difficult one to guess, but can anybody estimate the gains I would get if I upgraded my video card. I currently have :- Athlon 64 3200+ 1GB Crucial DDR Nvidia 6600GT I've been looking at 7900GT's which are about £200 and I dont know whether the performance gains over the 6600GT would be worth that sort of money. I'm just fed up with BF2 looking like BF1942 to get MP running smoothly. I'll probably put another gig of RAM in whilst i've got the case open as well My 3DMark05 is currently only 2882 and X2 benched at 102 fps @ 1024 x 768 with everything off as an indicator of current performance. Bit of a random post but I dont want to splash out on a card that wont give a significant boost.
With an upgrade to the 7900GT, not taking into account the CPU bottleneck I'd estimate an increase of about 30%. Which is a very good increase, but the figure maybe closer to 20-25% if the CPU becomes bottlenecked. Extra RAM will also probably help it. The 7900GTs are recommended by a few hardware sites.
If you have the money, i would reccomend an X1900XT, there around £270 but are better than the 7900GTX even dure to there 48shaders. but the bad thing about them is that they are pretty darn loud with those giant stock coolers that take up 2 slots and with the 7900GT they take up a single slot and are alot quiet, i bet the core of the 7900GT runs cooler aswell and the 7900GT seems to be a really excellent overclocker :good:, its value for its money :good:
It would be a problem if its loud, the PC is in the living room and is on 24/7. Little expensive as well but thanks for the advice
np, if you did get the x1900xt tho, i belive it would only be loud when playing games. anywayz you should be more than happy with a 7900GT, i was going to get that card too but decided to save up for the x1900xt.
