Hey. I am just looking for a bit of advice as to what to do with my laptop. For a couple of months i have had a screen at startup telling me failure is imminent. It says this: SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: WBC W800UE-22HCTO-(PM) WARNING:Immediatly back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be iminent. Press F1 to continue. Now this has been happening for a while now. I have read up on it and some people say yeah your hard drive will definatly go. Others say turning off SMART will stop the message showing and the hard drive will be fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Laptop is an Acer Extensa 6600
SMART was created and put there for a reason. The reason is that too many poor sods had their HDD's busted without warning, leaving them with their electronic-data-pants right up their cracks (also called a 'binary wedgy'). SMART is telling you that your HDD has developed problems which you cannot correct and that it is time to back-up your precious data and replace the drive. Now, if you are like me and you care about what is on your drive, bite the bullet, back-up the data and replace the drive. If you don't, turn SMART support off and carry on until the drive truly snufs it. Your choice...
Thanks for the reply! I back up my important stuff weekly anyway just incase. The laptop is still under its 3 year warranty so if it goes it will be covered by that.
Agreed...unfortunately the last time SMART told me my drive was dying on my old computer, it was already too late.
Good point! S.M.A.R.T is just an added bonus of late but as with any warning systems, it relies on the integrity and reliability of other components... nuff said
I would suggest instead of waiting you should just call them and tell them about this.. Also u will get rid of this message/risk by doing this!
Y not?? Just tell them that SMART is telling me that my HDD i going to die soon and my product is under warranty...
