    I've got a no-name (rebranded: 'Medion') machine
and I don't think there was any documentation
with it, so now I wonder if it is somehow possible
to find out the specs for the screen?

For example, response time, maximum settings, etc.

try changing thesettings XP first, cos XP tests the settings first and ask you if you wish to keep the settings, if you select yes the setting will be changed or it will default back to your original settings after 15 seconds

Look on the back of the monitor. There should be a sticker there. It probably won't have the details your looking for, but it should have a model number you can check on. If not Medion's site, Google will do the job.
