Hi all Right so that is the story so far: When I last installed Mandriva Shorewall used to load at start (I know by the verbosed start - shorewall starting [OK] but not run as I later found ou with the help of AT. Following AT's advice I removed shorewall (or so I thought) and installed firestarter. I then ran into some problems where firestarter would start on boot which I disabled. For a while everything was absolutely fine. However, I noticed problems, using torrents clients. I tried creating rules via firestarter to open a certain port but to no avail. The port just stays either stealthed or closed. Good for security but not for torrent traffic. Anyway, recently, in the last week or so, a problem I used to have with firestarter came back. And now even though I (I thought) disabled every possible 'start' option I still get a splash warning screen, from firestarter, asking for root password. So I though I will reinstall. So I did, but the problem persists. Again, I made sure 'start at boot' is disabled, and all other 'start' options on the GUI are disabled. The problem is still there. So, I thought, I will just do away with the firewall and manipulate iptables myself. Then by absolute chance I found out that shorewall, which I thought I uninstalled, is very much still there! WTF? It starts at boot and I cannot remove it. Even when I secumed to it and decided to try and use it, it will not start at boot (I should say run at boot, as it clearly laods at boot but does not run.... Bottom line: I want to remove shorewall completely. I have very little changes to aply to iptables and I am sure I can probably do it through the command line (with a bit of learning involved). Many thanks for looking and any help given. Sorry if the thread is a bit rushed... I am at work and must dash.... Update: Had some suggestions from Mandriva Club: 1. Remove Shorewall and install Firestarter - Already tried to no avail. However the user was very particular on how to make sure Shorewall is totally removed. Might try later. 2. Use Webmin - which I intend to try later on today and see if that helps. 3. Use Guarddog. I have to say that out of the three options (Shorewall, Firestarter and Guarddog) this one was the 'hardest' to get my head around. So I will leave this one to last in case the rest does not work out for me. If you are at all ineterested in the post and replies, see here - http://forum.mandrivaclub.com/viewtopic.php?t=45200
