first time comp builder (help plz)

welp its my first time building a computer, or at least it will be as soon as i order the parts. I figured its time to throw out the old gateway i got in 2002 and attempt to build my own. my friend will be helping me and he says hes done it before. I was jsut wondering what peoples thoughts are about what i will be ordering for parts. I am am probably between an beginner and intermediate when its comes to computers, so any insight will be appreciated.

yea it is for gaming. i feel ive been outa the gaming scene for too logn now. I used to love the days when i would stay up til 2 in teh mournin playin some quake 3 or Coutner strike, but now nothin works on my junk gateway. :(
 
I know the case has a power supply already, but as a general rule, the power supply included in a case is rather crappy. Secondly, Aspire power supplies are lower quality, plus, it may not offer the 24-pin ATX power connector that newer motherboards have.

The Antec True Power TPII 550 or the Enermax EG565P-VE are both available at Newegg for around $90 each. Either of those would be money well spent. You don't want to skimp on the power supply. Going cheap here is like trying to put regular in a Ferrari because premium is too expensive.

You also might look at the vanilla A8N-SLI. The Premium and Deluxe have a larger accessory package, and the Premium uses a heatpipe setup versus the traditional fan to cool the chipset on the motherboard. The motherboards are exactly the same, so don't think that you're being screwed out of performance with the A8N-SLI. The regular A8N-SLI is about $40 cheaper than the Deluxe or Premium versions.
 
Antec TruePowerII 480W for the power supply.

Cases: pretty much anything that can house the average ATX motherboard and looks good to you. Look for something that offers decent air intake in the front. Lian Li's are nice, but I find it hard to justify paying $200 for a case. Antec's Sonata series comes to mind, but, really, for cases, brand isn't that important. Get something you like. If it comes with a PSU, don't push it aside if you like the case, but do look and see if the same case is available without the power supply.

If you're in the UK, you can't buy from Newegg, btw.
