hey guys

Me got Gainward 6800GT Golden Sample AGP card, i bought it from my friend, now it has overclocking problems, the temperature creeps up so hot the card restarts the system, or some times in a game the screen goes black but the sound is still coming from the game.

i tryd changing the thermal compound(although not arctic silver), placed two 80mm fans to blow on the Card still to no avail. my PSU is 450watts it handled my 6600gt OC very well.

someone told me try cleaning the card with an ear bud dipped in ethanol. is it safe to do so?

common guys im in desperate need of ur help please.

Well, when you replace thermal compounds, it's strongly encouraged to clean it off with high-purity isopropyl alcohol. It specifically is the chip(s) with the thermal compound on it and the heatsink(s) making contact with said chips.
Reapply a thin layer to the surfaces mating with the heatsink. Do not overapply, as too much will end up acting as an insulator.

What's the make and model of your PSU. Wattage doesn't mean much these days.

ya man will try and let u know thanks a lot. but one problem is im in india and cant get this high end coolers here thats the bigggest problem.

the psu is a local made man, it says 6A rating, and all the 12v rails combined to give 20A. is this enough.

Given that you're running an AGP system, that's probably on the edge. However, it's a little premature to jump on the PSU just yet. Swapping the PSU won't resolve the problem if the video card is at fault.
