Hello, How would you guys rate this card? Or is it worth considering an Radeon 9600/FX5600/FX5700 Thanks, Joe p.s can you have a look at this for me.. Geforce FX 5900 Ultra, manufactured by Creative :swt: seems cheap, but any good? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2783633091&category=27387 Thanks alot!
The Radeon 9600 would be similar in performance, but would add DX9 support. The GeForce FX family isn't horrid, but the DirectX 9 on them isn't implemented correctly as it is on ATi's Radeon 9600/9500/9700/9800 cards.
Go with ATI. The 9600 Pro is better than both the 5600/5700, both in image quality and performance. I believe tha tthe link you provided is for a FX5900 non-ultra. IF, and I say IF it is in case the 5900 Ultra, get it because it's a steal at that price. But I don't think it is so just grab the 9600 Pro or XT.
yes sorry it isnt an ultra... Are creative really such a bad manufacturer as people claim they are? Appreciate your replies.
It's more on the support end, but that's more with their sound card drivers. It's the GeForce FX line that isn't the best, but even with the DX9 issue aside, if it were an ultra at that price, it's a damn good deal. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the same price you'd expect to pay for a 5900 you just bought retail.
Besides all this (and I'd go with a 9600XT or Pro too ), the auction isn't closed yet and could jump up another 50 bucks before it's closed. It's barely an OK deal as is. In addition, all the horrible things you've heard about Creative -- they're true. Of course they use fibreglass PCBs just like everyone else, and they don't manufacture a single component on the thing. But, they usually use lower-quality RAM than they should, and simply clock it up as high as they can so that it'll appear to be up to par with other similarly priced cards by different OEMs. That means they're usually not overclockable at all. Oh, and I think the existance of Creative Labs Tech Support Dept. is merely a myth.
Well I wouldn't buy a Creative Video card simply because it is not their specialty. However, I can't say I have any issues with my sound card so far so creative has been good to me. Of course I never asked for support so I don't know about that. (I very rarely ask a company for support because no companies has showed interest in solving my problems the few times I've asked them)
Ive decided to go for an 9800 Pro after all. Thing is im only running a mobo with AGP 4X is this going to affect performance much? is it worth upgrading the mobo aswell?? Thanks, Joe P.S running a 350 watt PSU, is this gonna be a prob?? thanks guys
If it's a good PSU, 350W should be fine. AGP 4x isn't going to be much, if any, of an issue. We aren't really maxing out AGP 4x yet, so raising the ceiling doesn't really do much.
For brand new, super high-polygon games like HL2 and Doom3 you will notice a difference. The AGP bus is critical to provide high transfer rates for complex pixel shaders and large amounts of polygons. Also, you'll probably want to avoid using n-patches in games (ATI TrueForm), because it drastically increases the amount of polygons rendered. On the other hand, I have an 8x AGP bus and for 90% of games I prefer not to use n-patches anyway. 4X AGP will decrease potential performance, but probably not enough to worry about it too much. Unless you're made of cash or planning on upgrading anyway, I'd just make due until you build your next PC. Addendum: Big B's right: you'll probably be OK with a 350watt PSU, if it's high enough quality. If you start having instability or strange problems though, replace it ASAP. 400+watt should be plenty for what you need. Should you have to purchase a new PSU, I like Enermax and Antec for consistant quality.
About the psu, it all depends on your system config. I used to have a Antec 350W w/ a 9600 Pro and it ran very well. However, when I moved to a 9800 Pro, the system was extremely slow. I changed the psu to a more powerfull one and now everything's perfect. As for performance. I don't think there'll be much difference between AGP4X and 8X. I'd guess no more than 200 points in 3dMar03.
hey guys, got my card today, verryy veryyy pleased with it, so far my system seems to be running fine, no slowdown. it is a cheap PSU "EAGLE" ROFL 350w it came with my case when I bought it.
