they both have 1800 clock speed. 400 ramdac. 512 mb. but 9600 has 650 core mhz and 8800 600 mhz. this makes 9600 better. but are there any other things that matter? because 9600 is cheaper most of the time i see them on the net. and everyone says 8800 is great, but i hear nothing about 9600.

Thee 8800GT will beat out a 9600GT anyday. There's alot more to GPUs than just ram size/speeds.

The 8800 GT has a MUCH higher texture fillrate and the 8800GT has almost double the stream processors...

A good rule of thumb to remind with Geforce cards:

    Low-range cards:
    6500
    7500
    8500
    9500

    Mid-range cards:
    6600
    7600
    8600
    9600

    High-range cards:
    6800
    7800
    8800
    9800

so the higher the 2nd number, the faster its performance will be in its class (the 1st number).

Would that mean a 6800 is better than an 8500. I already knew about the numbering system, but just wondered.

no because the 8500 is 2 generations further than the 6800.
If you mean if the 6800 is faster than the 6500, then you're right (assuming that the 6 series uses the same numbering system as the 7 and 8 series)

No I meant would performance be better on a 6800 Card because although it's 2 generations lower, it was a high end card, whereas the 8500 is a low end card.

The speed gets increased when a new generation is released. So you could say that a high end 6 series card would be just as fast or even slower than a mid-range card from the 8 series. But it's best to compare the specs of both cards. In this case the 6800 has higher specs than the 8500.

You over looked some specs my friend take a look:

    9600GT
    - GeForce 9600 GT core running at 650MHz
    - Shader Clock Speed of 1625MHz
    - 512MB GDDR3 Memory running at 1800MHz
    - 256-Bit Memory Interface
    - 64 Stream Processors
    - Shader Model 4.0
    - Memory Bandwidth: 57.6GB/s

    8800GT

    - GeForce 8800 GT core running at 600MHz
    - Shader Clock Speed of 1500MHz
    - 512MB GDDR3 Memory running at 1800MHz
    - 256-Bit Memory Interface
    - 112 Stream Processors
    - Shader Model 4.0
    - Memory Bandwidth: 57.6GB/s

Conclusion is that the 8800GT is a better card :)

The 9600GT is the lower end of the 9series card and the 8800GT is the mid range of the 8 series

One last point is never judge a card by how much memory it has, some people think that a card with 512mb is twice as fast and twice as good then a card with 256mb lol
