i right click the .gif animation on the internet and it brings up a dialogue box asking where i would like to save the animation but will only save one picture and not the whole animation

Ok, when you get the dialog box asking where you want to save it, you'll see that at the bottom of the box (below where it says " File name: ") there's an option that says " Save as type ". Just expand it and choose the " GIF(*.gif) " extension. Hit " Save " and you should be good to go.

Now, remember that in order to see the animation you need to open that pic with a browser (IE, Firefox, etc).

    do the gifs actually play?

i once had a problem where no gif played on my pc, just would be 1 image.

in the end, after scanning for malware etcetc, i reinstalled xp as i felt like it, system acting really buggy, and that cured it.

yes, but do the gifs actually play when you are looking at them like on a website, for example?

if they arent moving at all, then u had what i had, is my explanation

That's very odd, all I get is a .gif option, try it with another gif, like Snipers little smilie for example.
