Hello, So I currently have a Micro ATX board and a reference gtx 780. I am planning on switching to a difference board (this one) that is also Micro ATX. I also wish to run the Gigabyte 980 ti G1 Gaming card in SLI. Being such a thick card though, I am unsure if it will block the other PCI slot. I tried looking for the specific sizes on Gigabytes website and did find them but am not sure if it will fit. Motherboard: Here Graphics Cards In SLI: Here My current card is listed as a dual slot card. The 980 ti isn't specified as a dual slot but it's thickness is 42mm. I plan on buying the 980 ti first so if it won't fit in SLI with this new motherboard I would have to switch to another card. I am trying to keep a white/black/neutral color scheme in my case so this card goes perfectly with the RGB led. Thank you all so much!
Where do you need GTX980 Ti SLI? Also buying expensive card right now is waste of money. Obsolete technology, better coming next year.
It's a dual-slot card. Having said that, running 2 of those things in a small case might not be a great idea. If you're using something larger than a mATX case, it should be okay (assuming good airflow). You could also e-mail Gigabyte for the exact dimensions, but I would imagine they have taken the possibility of multiple graphics cards into account in the design. Unless the 980 is doing something far beyond what your 780 is, you might want to hold off. Secondly, what resolution are you running and on what monitor?
These upgrades are so I have a shot at running VR headsets like the oculus rift and htc vive next spring without the games having to be at medium settings. They require a lot of pixels and very high framerates. I have been following stuff like the Oculus Rift for years so I am definitely getting it and if this is what I need to do then so be it.
Here's some things to consider before dropping all your money: -What game(s) you'll play on this and what resolution (1080p, 1440p, what)? -How much you want to spend on this. -Are you set with sticking to a Micro ATX motherboard -Are you able to run with 1 video card? With 2 video cards pumping out a lot of heat, if you have a Micro ATX case and Micro ATX sized motherboard, I see a problem with the heat output of the two cards. Second, if you're going to move to a new motherboard, why not bump up to an ATX form factor which could allow for some extra space between the cards, or at least case with better air circulation options. I mean, you're asking about spending $1300 on a pair of video cards, so it's only fair to ensure they don't cook. You've indicated a willingness to spend money for a new motherboard, so why not jump to a size that can benefit you? Also, what power supply do you have now? If it's not something substantial, you'll need to upgrade that too.
