GigaByte's iDrive Hard Disk

GigaByte is soon to be releasing what they call 'iDrive'!
Based around a PCI card the new iDrive is in concept a Hard Drive that uses any RAM from DDR266 upwards, utilises a SATA interface build on SATA1 standards!

Taiwan's Gigabyte came up with an interesting idea, presumably while looking for new, attractive product ideas: What if you were to design a solid state hard disk out of normal memory modules? The result was the i-RAM, a board of medium size with four DIMM sockets, a buffer battery and a serial ATA interface. Power is supplied by a PCI plug, so you need to have at least one free slot, while the card requires the space of two expansion cards due to the size of the memory module on the side.

Looks promising although i would like to see alot more then 4GB's !

Yea using RAM as mass storage would be great, but its getting past the density and cost problems.

kinda dumb, ram doesn't last as long as a hard drive and 16-hours (when battery is in peak condition most likely) isn't much. Anything important-HDD it up.

What would be truly good is having static RAM solid state storage. Static ram uses transistors instead of a capacitor and transistor to hold bits. Meaing that they don't have to be refreshed like DRAM. But they're expensive as hell.
