I want to sell my computer, but have had a lot of personal data on the hard disk and am concerned about any of it being recovered after selling it. Anyone know of a really good, secure data delete program which will do a very, very thorough job of deleting every bit of data of all kinds from the hard drive?
If you can reinstall windows then i would highly recommend dban. dban will permanently erase EVERYTHING on the disk/s or partition/s (including the operating system) that you use it on! (make sure you unplug any pen drives / flash drives / digital camera's / mp3 players etc unless you want to delete everything on them too!) Its very simple to use, just burn the image to to a cd (if you need the software to do this, i would suggest CDBurnerXP) and boot the computer from the cd (just like you do when your installing windows). type autonuke and push enter! (this will take quite awhile, so i would suggest you leave it running overnight). if you accidentally delete something with dban, your :swear: as there is no chance whatsoever of recovering it!
I have the restore CD but am not sure if that will work the same as a "bootable" CD. Any idea if that would work ok?
