hard drive converting

all right so my old emachines crashed, and i went out and bought a new gateway, nothing special, just what i needed, and i am wondering how do i get my files from my old computer to my new one? can i just add the hard drive to the gateway, do i need a converter, or what?

well it depends, is the old hard drive IDE? SATA? does the new gateway have an IDE Hard Drive? is it a SATA Hard Drive?
If the old hard drive is IDE then there shouldnt really be a problem (i'm thinking it will be since the other computer is old) you can take it out the emachines get a new cable (if its needed) and put it into the gateway (making sure your power supply isnt too skimpy and can power it as well as the current stuff in there)
Then you can see if its recognised and copy files from there. Although what actually happened to the old computer? Maybe we could have helped you save it...

In addition to remembering to configure the drives as master and slave with the jumpers :)
Should take you all of 5 mins to get up and running!

the old ones a pata, the new one is sata. on the old computer, the fan over the processor burned out and we didnt realize it for a couple of months, so the processor cooked and we couldn even boot up anymore.

Yup, simple, connect the PATA drive to the Primary IDE channel set up as master, boot into windows, let windows do it's thing and then restart and you should be good to go!

yup, its not going to be a problem, just make sure you get jumpers set right for master and slave, then you'll be good to go!
