    Hi guys.

Right... i had a problem but that has gone, apart from this one:

I have an external hard drive in NTFS format.

I need to convert it into FAT32 and create multiple partitions as the drive is 40gb

What do i do to do this?

    Thanks!

Welcome to hardwareforums bluefoxtim  + Merry Christmas!

you can create 40GB FAT32 partitions, and they will work with windows.... just windows wont let you create them! (I belive the maximum size of a fat32 partition is something overly large like 2 Tera Bytes)

I dont know how to do this without using a liveCD, but I'm sure somebody else here will know so hold up and hopefully someone will post a solution!

Im guessing your using windows, so why are you wanting to change the file system to FAT32?

    Ok thanks!

Looked at partition logic and i have created an iso image with it and put it onto a cd-rom, don't know what to do now! Can't see a program to open or anything? :O

Also I have windows 98 boot disks if that will help?

    Thanks

Would you be happy removing the hard drive from the caddy and connecting it up inside the computer?

if so, this should be your answer... Install Windows XP on Large FAT32 Partitions

PS there is any easier way, but you would have to download a 700MB ISO.... http://releases.ubuntu.com/edgy/ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso << ubuntu 6.10 linux live cd / installer (start in safe graphics mode, when it has booted click admininstration > gnome partition editor & make sure the usb drive is selected and not your main hard drive!!!)

There must be was to do it from windows too, but i cant help you there! sorry :(

Thanks again. Before you posted I had another look round and realised I couldn't format in fat32 because my partition was over 32gb so now i split it into half 19gb each about and now I have 2 partitioned areas in fat32 so im ok for the moment.

Any further help on somehow merging these two would be appreciated :)

Thanks to everyone who helped (or tried to) :p

Ive been doing some digging... try using Rannish Partition Manager to create the partition (i have never heard of it before, but it was suggested as a solution on another forum)

Go to Disk Management(RightClick MyComputer > Manage > Disk Management) and delete/create/merge partitions from here but if u want to create a virtual partion on current partition then u need a software for that like Partition Magic.. For FAT32, you can select that option before formatting ur drive in Disk Mgt..

    @Karanislove

Windows tries to prevent you from creating FAT32 Partitions larger than 32GB, to create FAT32 Partitions on windows you have to use 3rd part software.

But when u install windows then doesnt matter how big the drive is but it gives an option of formatting ur drive with FAT file system...

No, if the partition is larger than 32GB then the only option available is to format it as NTFS on all the windows installers i have used (2000 and XP)
