Hard drive kills PC!

Hi everyone, first post starts off with what looks like the demise of my computer. I can no longer boot windows all I get when I turn it on is a page telling me I have an Intel mother Board, then it freezes. The hard drive activity light is constantly on, it's not flickering just blazing away! Does anybody have any ideas? Many thanks. Peter
 
it sounds like your IDE connector is reversed on your HDD or the boot device priority need changing in the BIOS

what happened before this occurred ?

Edit: or did you change something ?
 
Hi, The PC has been running fine for the last four years with only an increase in memory two years ago, Before it finaly froze I noticed that the programe I was in didn't respond to the mouse and I couldn't get out of it, the only way out was through Ctrl Alt Delete which I did and since then' problem as described. I have no idea if I can get into the BIOS and even if I could I'm afraid I wouldn't know what to do with them. Peter
 
Hi, I'm rather computer challenged and nt sure of the difference between "post" and "boot" anyway all it does is show the page with Intel mother board then nothing. The HDD activity light is permently lit. Peter

Well POST stands for Power On Self Test, which kinda makes it obvious what it does. When your PC is first turned on the CPU tells the PC's main components to run their internal tests to be sure they are operational. Its pretty much the first thing that your PC will do at boot. A good POST will be signaled by one or two beeps followed by Windows loading itself etc. If you can get to your CMOS setup your POST will be fine.
 
Hi, No "beeps" whatsoever, I can't seem to get anywhere ,tried booting in safe mode. and everything else I have been advised to do. no response at all. Peter

Have you tried "Last Known good config" (I think thats what its called). Apoligies if this is covered by "everything else". Also you might try booting using the "enable boot logging" option which will create a log of the boot process in C: called ntbtlog.txt. From here you'll need your WIn installation CD to boot into recovery console where you should be able to read the log using the EDIT utility. hopefully this may uncover the problem should it be Windows related.
 
Your computer is not even passing the first display page.....
Lets try this..(I hope you are not afraid to open up your pc)
Remove everything...i mean RAM, HDD, DVD/CD, Floppy, video card or any other extra cards you got in it...
Start your computer and see if your PC is showing some sort of error(Basically what you are checking there is that your MOBO/Processor is not faulty)..
If it gives you some sort of beeps or shows you some sort of errors then try adding things one by one... and see how it goes.. GOodluck
 
Hi, I am not afraid to open the computer the only problem is I don't know my memory from my PSU! However will give your advise a go, many thanks for replying. Peter
