Hard drive lucky dip!

Wow, I can't believe it! I went into the kitchen earlier today to make my breakfast. As I was pouring the milk into my cereal, I noticed a big box full of hard drives! I asked my landlord later on why they were there. He said the guy who lives next door owns a computer store and buys loads of computer hardware. Apparently these hard drives are returns. That could mean they don't work, or were simply bought in error. This guy doesn't have time to test them all, so he just threw them out! My landlord salvaged them, and was going to ship them over to Africa. But I get first pickings! Oh Yes! :)

Whats in the box?

1x 80GB Maxtor Diamond Plus 9
5x 40GB Maxtor Diamond Plus 8
1x 30GB Maxtor Fireball 3
8x 20GB Western Digital WD200
1x 30GB Western Digital 23200
1x --GB Western Digital Protege
1x 40GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.1
1x --GB Seagate ST32155N
1x 10GB HP branded

I'm going to test these, and i'll post the outcomes
 
Well, i've tested them all and some actually work! :)

The ones that worked:

40GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.1
3 of the 20GB Western Digital WD200.

I formatted them with ReiserFS and copied a 450MB file to each of them. No problems whatsoever!

So, none of the Maxtors worked at all, and most of the WD200s were dead. They either failed to be detected whatsoever, or simply hung my computer at the POST!. The Seagate ST32155N turned out to be a SCSI drive, so I couldn't test it. The HP branded hard drive showed no life.

So i've ended up with 4 working drives. How :swear: COOL is that! :)

Isn't it just :)

I don't know whether to keep the WD200s as spares, or sell them on. How much do you think they are worth?

There specs are:
20GB
7,200RPM
UDMA/ATA-100
 
I'd probably have one off you, I want to make an external drive for random files etc :)

I'm not sure how much they're worth, they're not really sold anymore but this is what I found through a quick google search.

Thats fine, but you must understand that I can't guarantee them in any way! They are all returns, so they may have defects.
Some may have been returned due to incompatibily, or maybe they just weren't wanted. Perhaps they were sold to n00bs who couldn't set them up properly and then assumed they were DOA!

As I said, 3 of the WD200s appear to work well, and the other 5 were competely dead.

Yeah I understand that, I'll have a think about it as I need to find an enclosure as well, I'll look for one and let you know :)
