    Hey everyone,

I finally have time to try and fix my desktop. I had a full owrking pc until I got a new motherboard from my brother. It was working for him just before he disconnected it. I then set everything up and put everything where it is supposed to be on the motherboard and turned it on. What I see is the splash screen of the motherboard then I see a black screen and I see that my cd drive is detected, the hard drive, however is not detected. It then tries too look for something to boot from but no primary slave or anything is detected. The cd drive is detected as primary master (I think at least.) How can I set my SATA hard drive up to be detected?

does the motherboard have onboard SATA controller or do you have a SATA card ?
SATA drives are usually detected after the IDE devices, have you checked the boot order in the BIOS ?

Edit: traditionally CDs are usually set to slave, but there is no reason why it can't be master, except the primary master are usually the default boot device

SATA harddisks are replacing old IDE harddisks, older motherboards usually had 2 IDE channels & each channel could have only 2 devices attached to them however SATA harddisks can only have 1 device attached to each SATA port so most motherboard manufactures usually have at least 4 SATA ports (there are many more advantages) however, there are some motherboards with zero SATA ports, these motherboards can have a SATA controller card added

    BTW: HDD = HardDisk Drive

    hope that helps you understand

well my motherboard is an asus a7v-600-x I am not sure what I should do. How do I configure it though so that it will detect it? I am wondering if there is a problem with the hard drive or the motherboard.. I think if there is a problem it is the motheroard though.

sorry, i should have said, when you turn the computer on it will load the BIOS screen it will & you will see on screen something like "Press <Del> to run setup", this is when you press "delete"

in a few seconds you will be in the BIOS

BTW: your motherboard manual is here

everything you need is in the manual

BTW: you have an onboard SATA controller

BTW: BE CAREFUL IN THE BIOS, AS IF YOU SAVE ANY CHANGES, YOU'LL HAVE TO RESET THE BIOS, good luck & if you want any further help just ask
