I suppose I should see how it does on my LAN box first. I've not found any really compelling need to update, especially since I'm using Firefox over IE.
 
I'm soon to be getting my house networked - 3 PC's and a laptop, all wirelessly.

I have been told that getting SP2 will screw this up.

Will it?

Personally I can't notice the difference between SP1 and the original XP, but that's just me.

No I've not because i'm stressed at trying to get my PC to work, and i've just never got round to doing it.
 
All this SP2 drama reminds me of SP6 in the NT4 days. It broke nearly everything, and NT4 was strictly a business OS, so it was really bad. They finally released SP6a, which fixed much of the problems which the last 'fix' had caused... Those of you whom are just coming into the NT family with XP (NT5.1), haven't had the fun of cleaning up after MS's half-baked "fixes" yet, and may you never have to. My advice to you is to install SP2 only on non-critical machines, which will have a similar configuration to your critical ones. Field test SP2 for at least a month before deploying it on important PCs, or chaos and bloodshed may ensue! Also, the importance of backups cannot be understated. Remember, even after SP2 is applied, there are something like 16 gaping security holes in Windows at any given time, so don't consider it a fix-all solution. If it ends up breaking your important machines, it could be even worse than getting hacked... :swt:
 
I have a slipstreamed disc. I downloaded but I lost my winxpcd. I still use the same serial though. I end up reinstalling in about 2 weeks or less. I hate it. But that's just my opinion!
 
I'd just want to point out, not everyone has problems with SP2! like myself, I have had it installed for 4 weeks plus I think and not had any problems!
 
I've had it installed since it was made available to MSDN subscribers and haven't had too much of a problem. Only complaint I have is having to click another box to download a file.

It's a great feature as it prevents drive by downloads but there should be an option right in the menu to disable it for that particular site like there is for the popup blocker.

Now I just need to get a chance to compile the tabbed browser addon MS put out for IE.
 
i've had Sp2 installed for around a week now, and i havn't had any problems with it, all i can say is goto the microsoft website and search for sp2, there is a list of:

1. Programs the will not work with SP2 (as they stand - until they are updated or re-released)
2. Programs that do work, but cause lots of errors / problems

so check it out, if you have some of the programs, or 1 or 2, uninstall them or look up on what the vendor of the program is doing about it.

if you have a network, download the 250mb (odd) version of SP2, it allows you to install over networks instead of just of the net each time.

people will perhaps disagree with me, but yes SP2 i think is a very good release, and i like the fact that it reminds the "average joe" user, not just to keep his virus / firewall upto date, but how to do it..

and this is the first step in all of microsoft's history that ibelieve they may have made a small step in their direction of making user friendly os's. *laughs* taken em long enough to do 1 OS program thats actually any good.

(i personally f**king hate the security shit in it, but for the people i have to work with, it is alot easier)
