first of all i'l introduce myself as this is my first post im Craig (as u can tell from the username) im 21 and from scotland. Now there's the boring bit over with Ive had my pc for about 2 years now and its pretty pathetic to be honest, all i got it for was to download music with. Now im wanting something fast, with good memory, runs silent, and looks good all for as little ££ as possible. the spec of my pc is 1.75ghz,224mb ram with and 80 gig hard drive. Im wondering wether to upgrade this or wether im better of just building from scratch?
Welcome to HWF. Let's figure out where you want to go with this upgrade. What do you want to do or do better that you're not satisfied with in your current rig? How much, realistically can you spend? We know you don't want to sell a kidney, but what kinda cash do you have to work with.
Well i would say £500 max, basically im wanting more memory and a faster computer that runs alot quieter that this one.Not too bothered about casing, needs to have a flat screen monitor though
firsly do you like a challenge ? if yes = go for it you masakist and have a try building a new pc - it is cheaper if no = buy a custom pc, pc shops only charge about £50 to put the bits together
i love a challenge and reckon it will be a task to put a pc togethor Any links to the cheapest sites/shops for parts would be appreciated also if somebody could possible post up a note of a good pc set up as im clueless at the moment about what im going to need
Actually, bumping up your RAM will help in the speed aspect of things. Now, you'll need to find out what CPU and motherboard you have. [google]CPU-Z[/google] will help if you don't know. What I'm thinking will do the job best for you, would be to bump your memory up to 1GB, get some quieter fans for the case and CPU heatsink (probably replace the heatsink altogether), get a low-end video card, and get a flat CRT 19" monitor. I propose the video card because, given the amount of RAM you're stating that you have, it's an unusual number which leads me to think that you've got integrated video in your system. This generally makes use of part of the system RAM, and that isn't doing you any favors. One last question: what OS do you use?
