Since putting my computer in my new case my HDD has made a faint noise, but recently it has got louder, it's annoying now and I'm wondering if my beloved Seagate HDD is on its way out? I originally though it was the HDD vibrating in it's housing as in my old case there were rubber dampers and scres and this new oen it's tool-less and seemed a bit 'loose'.
I've attached the noise as an mp3 (mono, 64kbps to keep size down) in a .zip file.
Could somebody have a listen to it and tell me what they think. The quality may not be amazing but I didn't want the filesize to be too big. The sound in the attachment is duller and has a thicker tone than the actual sound so it's not the greatest of recordings.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

Are you sure its an internal noise. I've never heard a HD make that noise before. Make sure that its screwed in as tightly and securely as possible.

It's screwed in pretty damn tight, I'll put it into my old case sometime and see if it still makes the noise. I've heard really old drives make the noise before but this drive is only 2 years old and hasn't had that much stressful use so that's why I'm wondering what it is.

This comment is really off topic but not so at the same time - if that makes sense?

The old Compaq computer I found in the skip has a Seagate hard drive. Bloody hell is it loud!! When ever you load up a program, I sounds like World War 2 all over again!

The old ones are quite loud. I have a 40GB one in my Athlon 900 rig, and thats loud as something really loud. My 120GB seagate is quiet though.

Yeah should have mentioned that, it's when something is loading, when nothing is being acessed the drive is silent, it's just during access that it makes that noise... :O

I am no expert but it sounds like normal read/write noise only a tad too loud.

What monitoring program have you got?

I know that SpeedFan can tell you the health of your drive.
Although I think the drive need to support SMART.

Got SpeedFan and SMART is enabled on my drive, yeah it sounds like an amplified version of read/write activity, it's just the increasing noise level worried me.
I'm now thinking there's nothing wrong and that the drive may have worked a bit loose or something, thanks for the info!

Honestly, to me the drive sounds fine, just a little on the loud side. I doubt it's anything to worry about.
