If anyone can help me with this it'd be great The other day, while running my computer like usual, it froze on me. I left it for 1/2 an hour and then restarted it. At that time, I looked in my BIOS and saw that my CPU was running at 105 degrees celsius (221 degrees fahrenheit). So I turned it off and let it cool down for a bit. Since then, I have been unable to start windows. Initially, I thought that my CPU or motherboard may have been damaged to a point where starting windows was too strenuous. However, when I put my cpu into my sister's computer to test it, Windows started just fine. Also, when I put my sister's hdd into my computer, windows starts fine as well. At this point, I decided to check out my HDD. When I run the Windows XP Recovery Console, I am able to access all of my other drives, but not my C:. when I give the command 'dir' to the C:, it tells me that "an error occured during directory enumeration". Furthermore, when I put my C: into my sister's computer as the primary slave, BIOS is able to see it fine, and so does 'My Computer'. However, when I try to access it, it gives me an error message and when i look in its properties, it says it has 0 bits free and 0 bits used. Also, when I run my computer, it now reaches 85 degrees celsius (185 degrees fahrenheit) within 6 minutes. And all I do is go into the Windows XP Recovery Console... which really shouldnt be that strenuous for my CPU. I realize this is somewhat of a long post, but if anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Motherboard: Asus A7N 8X-X HDD: Western Digital IDE 80 GB w/ 8 MB Cache
I don't know what's wrong, but make sure that CPU heatsink is secured properly, and that the fan is working. Secondly, make sure it's capable of disappating the heat from that CPU. At the temps you have, you're going to toast that CPU. When the CPU gets hot enough, data corruption occurs...and that, needless to say, is a problem, and likely where your hard drive issues lie. I'd also guess that the hard drive with your data on may be corrupted enough that you might have to reinstall Windows AFTER correcting the heating issue. 85*C is a very unsafe temp as it's right around the maximum operating temp for that CPU.
My heatsink has been working fine for the 2 years that I've had it and this is the first time that I've taken it off since the initial installment and the fan works. Ive been afraid that my hdd might be actually damaged to the point where I'm unable to recover my data.
