Ok i just bought a new fan and heatsink http://www.coolpc.com.au/store/index.php?item=6
its a Globalwin CAK4-88T i bought it because it was recommended on the website as one of the best, i only noticed after i bought it that the date of the review was 2002 but i couldnt stop the order. i recevied it today and i checked the box it says for amd 2200+ and P4 2.53 Ghz but on a sticker on the side it says for AMD 2600+ i installed it anyway, it has to be better than the oem cpu heatsink and fan because its of full copper with a 4000rpm fan. i used the thermal heatsink grease that came with it, it installed fine but i checked the hardware monitor in my bios and it says that the cpu is running at like 57-59C thats gotta be wrong .. i also installed motherboard monitor and it's all over the place .. it thinks its 50 then it thinks its 30 .. and just now it says its cooler than the room temperature .. im confused as all hell please help me

it also says its for a P4 3.06 Ghz and up on the website .. :sad: whats going on
 
Globalwin does make some pretty awsome cooling products. I've been a big fan in the past, but haven't used that particular heatsync. Even so, it's solid copper and it should be able to conduct quite a bit of heat. If you have a Barton-core CPU, your CPU will actually run quite a bit cooler than a 2200+, so don't worry too much about the rating. As far as your MoBo heat sensors, they're often very inaccurate on certain boards. The real test of performance is either a laser thermal sensor (if you have one), or the good old fashion finger test. If you can't hold your fingertips on the heatsync for 10 seconds without substantial pain, it's running too hot. :swt: Also, you can get even better cooling out of your new 'sync by replacing the stock 80mm fan with a higher RPM model. For instance, a Thermaltake SmartFan. They can really kick out the RPMs, and get even faster when your system gets warmer. Sweet. :)
 
You might also try removing the heatsink, cleaning it and the CPU off with isopropyl alcohol, then reapplying a paper-thin layer of the compound. All the thermal paste is supposed to do is fill in the micro gaps that exist (this is regardless of how flat the heatsink is).
 
ok its running great now, it wasnt on correctly i reapplied some paste and put the heatsink back on and now it is working awesome, ive overclocked to 3.6GHz and its still running cool, one problem tho is that when i was removing the heatsink as i was shown in the manual my screwdriver slipped and it hit my ram .. i didnt think it was possible either, now my ram doesnt work luckily enuff my dad has lent me 512 for a short while my ram is still under warranty but i dont think warranty is coverd by things such as screwdriver slippage .. what are the symptoms of faulty ram?
 
You might try taking it back to the place you bought it from. If there's no physical damange that can be seen, you should be able to get a new stick. If the shop won't do it for you, then try Kingmax themselves.
