Hey Guys and Girls, New to the forum, but seem to have an old question by virtue of reading previous posts... Got a Samsung SD-612S Master 12E. I bought it from Overstock.com and it already had gone through the maximum number of region changes and now was locked on Region 2. Because I happened to be very busy that month that I purchased the device, I received it and put it on the shelf to install "later". When "later" came, the 30 day warranty had run out and I was stuck with an expensive CDROM because the unit would do all of the functions of a CDROM (i.e., play music CD's, install software, read files, etc.) but would come up with a region error when I tried to play DVD's. To add insult to injury, the firmware noted on the drive was SF07. All the forums that I have read on the subject do not indicate any individual who has this firmware, nor do any of the firmware sites have any updates or backdates to the "SF" versions. Now, as I recall, "back in the day", when I was dealing with 486 machines, hard disk controllers had firmware that you could read, edit and save on the EEROM. This was a useful function as new, higher capacity drives were being manufactured and released seemingly on a monthly basis. Is it possible to download the firmware code, edit it, and reflash the drive firmware to correct the error? I have plenty of CDROM drives so I would like to experiment with this one. Also, as a second alternative, I have a Samsung DVD drive that appears to have a head assembly that is done. Are the head assemblies the same and can I pull the board from drive one, mount it in drive two and get one working DVD out of two that are not completely functioning? Nice opening post eh? LOL Sorry for War and Peace, but am looking for alternatives. J.D. - Columbia, SC
This needs to be moved to General hardware or something like that to get a better chance of being answered!
No probs, it's just that the Intro Zone people just come on to say hi, I think your post will get answered quicker somewhere else :good:
Try here... http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=55883 DriverGuide.com then try here... http://www.instantresources.com/dvd/4/samsung-dvd-rom-driver.html samsung dvd rom driver
Thanks... I'll try your SS11 solution first... The second link you gave sends me to the Samsung home page. That is where I started and had no luck. Is there somewhere in specific that I should be looking? Please advise... Thanks again... J.D. - Columbia, SC
hi jdobiz ok, I found this firmware http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/drivers/78/78969.htm it says "If your DVDs don't play right using the Samsung SD-612 Model 12E, try this solution." its located here http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/drivers/78/78969.htm you will need to login using the user name driver2 and password all if you can't download, please post and I'll get the file for you.
Appreciate the legwork and assistance. I did try that version last month, I believe, and, much to my dismay, it said something along the lines of "incorrect model" due to this #$@#$@ SF07 firmware version. But, I will give it the "old college try" again and see if it is a different file. I greatly appreciate your rapid response in an effort to help resolve this situation. Regards, J.D. - Columbia, SC
no problem, a bit more searching around and I found this, model SD-612S @ http://etna.rpc1.org/samsung/index.html
Yes sir, been there too. Tried each one of those options with the same result (aka, incorrect model). I finally derived the opinion that the software is looking for an SB level firmware.
