OK, so one of our sales reps here int he office sent in his laptop. Filled with spyware and adware (can thank porn sites for that). so the fastest and easiest way to clean it up would be a fresh install of windows. So I start reinstalling, computer restarts to continue installation and that's when I realize I didn't backup ANY OF HIS FILES! I f-ed up real bad, he needs that. So I restarted the computer mid-setup and pulled the CD out. The computer goes to continue the installation (i was thinking maybe i could get back into windows) instead of starting windows. Can i still get access to the files? My only thought would be to pull the hard drive out and throw it in an external enclosure, but I dont have one for this hard drive, just a 3.5" at home. What can I do? I cannot stress enough how important it is that I recover these files.
did the XP install do a full or a quick format or did you select "leave data on drive" BTW: some data will have being overwritten, and is probably unrecoverable, try google with this [google]free data recovery[/google] or you could try a data recovery company, they usually only charge by the amount of data they recover[ot]you won't do that again[/ot]or are you prepared to pay for data recovery software ?
Well, I booted Knoppix, which I've never used before. I found the files, but I can't seem to copy to the 2nd partition on the hard drive. Is it possible to access my network? I don't know how to use Knoppix so I don't know.
good idea i've never used Knoppix either, personally i use Kubuntu Feisty, & i find it difficult to use konsole BTW: doesn't Knoppix have any graphical file managers, obviously after mounting the partition where you want (/mnt/hdax) replace x with the partition number Edit: is this guide any good to you BTW: downloading Knoppix, to help with any future data recovery & installing VMware you should be able to but i've no idea how, i do know some networking stuff, but not nearly enough to give advise, sorry
