Hi, First of all, I apologise because I'm sure this kind of thing will have been covered in countless threads, but I would appreciate some advice from anyone about this specific situation because for obvious reasons it's got me worried! I'm recording an album on my PC, but have run into problems... A friend of mine built the PC for me a year or so ago, using an AMD Athlon processor that I think was 2.2 Ghz (or whatever, sorry not 2 technical on the spec side of things - Mhz, Ghz, dunno!) but overclocked it a little bit. Not sure what make anything else on the PC is, but suffice it to say he used a good quality power supply, motherboard, etc and adequate cooling. I've been running it constantly for the past year with no problems, no overheating or anything and haven't changed any of the settings. However, this morning I was listening to a looped bit of my recording while walking around the flat (so I didn't see anything happening on the screen) when the speakers just went "beep" and when I returned to the screen it was blank and on standby, ie. no signal. The fan was still running but the PC wouldn't switch off so I had to switch it off at the back after trying everything else, and noticed a slight smell of burning electrics. When I tried to switch it on again, the fan started up but the screen did not seem to have a signal, and neither of the status lights on the front were on, and the shutdown shortcuts still didn't work. I'd only had it on for an hour and prior to this hadn't had any problems. I know you're probably having a good old laugh at how obvious the problem is or whatever, but if anyone could indicate to me what the problem's likely to be, I'd be hugely grateful as I need to get the recording finished! I thought it was the processor to begin with but after reading some threads on here it might be the power supply, but I hope the hard disk will be OK - as I said, any leads and components are high quality. Looking at the sketchy details I've given, what do you reckon? Thanks for any help Matt
Your best bet is the PSU especially as you get a burning smell which is never a good sign. Unfortunately PSU's have a habit of taking out other components with them when they go, most usually the RAM.
