ok I installed an AMD 3200+ into a K8N Neo4 motherboard. It came with a heat sink and fan and that heat conductive gel. Well the motherboard was bad and I had to remove my processor. When I tried to pull the heat sink away after I removed the claps that held it in place, it didn't want to let go and when I finally pulled it up the processor came with it! It had been locked down and everything and the gel ripped it right out of the motherboard! I looked at it and all the pins and everything seemed to be ok, I worry that the metal top might have pulled away from the rest of processor a bit. My question is: Is this thing normal?
Normal you say? Definately not! Sounds like the heatsink had thermal adhesive on it which hasn't been used on CPU's for many years. If the CPU looks ok, it probably is, but if the pins are bent, take it to a computer shop and they'll bend them back into shape if need be.
What do they use now? If they don't use this stuff any more is there a non-stick thermal gel that is used? If so what would you recommend?
If you're referring to the thing that snaps in place to lock the heatsink ontop of the processor then yes.
I mean a clip like this: http://prohardver.hu/html/proci/socket_939/pics/socket.jpg The silver coloured one on the side, it locks in the CPU in place keeping it in the socket.
The thermal pad (and this does happen with paste) can become slightly sticky with the changes in temps from the CPU heating up. After unhooking the heatsink from the retention brackets, go ahead and move the heatsink around in a swirling motion. There's not a whole lotta room--as it should be--but this will loosen the compound up enough so you don't pull the CPU out.
I've had this happen to me a few times before, it's not normal, but i've never actually damaged a cpu when this happened.
Hi i just joined this forum cus i have screwed my pc i think. I made the same mistake as the first poster, i was replacing an old heatsink and fan witha new quit system. When i detached the fan and tried to take it out it was stiking, so i pulled it a little harder(rather than swirling the heatsink) and the whole cpu and heatsink came out in one. So i checked to see if the cpu was ok, a couple of the pins were bent, so i very gently bent them back into place, everything looked fine no pins were missing, none looked cracked or anything. So i rebuilt my computer and switched it on. To find NOTHING booted up, all the fans powered up etc but nothing on my screen. At first i thought i had trashed my cpu but i looked arorund on the net and if there appears to be no damage to the pins after being put back in place it seems like it should work. So i think it could be the motherboard was damaged when the cpu ripped out of it? The release bar for the cpu was still down so i am guessign that is not good. WHat do you guys think?
