Hi I am a complete amateur and I reecntly aquired a pc with OS Windows 98 on it. I need this or ideally Windows 95 (which I have a copy of) to run an old printer. However, even though it was working when my mate had it, now the keyboard AND the mouse aren't working. We have tried swapping the cables but nothing works. We would reinstall Windows but how can we even do that if we haven't got a mouse or keyboard? Any simple to understand advice available??? Cheers Paul
Is it a usb or PS2 (a small round'ish plug) keyboard + mouse? If it is a problem with windoze, then you should still be able to re-install (as the disc will still work) have you tried re-installing?
Hi Thanks for the reply. Was giving up hope ) It is a PS/2 I think, the little round push in type. I haven't tried reinatlling because I didn't know if it was possible without a keyboard or mouse??? Sometimes the lights flicker on and off on the keyboard and others they don't. Could the connection be loose in the back? Cheers
The installer cd should be able to find the keyboard + mouse, if it doesn't.... well, um try it and post back
hmmm, which cables did you swap? when you turn the PC are you able to get into BIOS by pressing delete? if not, have a look at the pins at the end of the wire, make sure they are all straight. things to think about; - try the current keyboard / mouse in another system - try a different keyboard/ mouse in the current system
Hi We can't get into BIOS by pressing delete and we have tried anothe keyboard but it still doesn't work. We ahve checked the pins and they are spot on. We just took a look inside to see if anything was loose but it all seems fine! Any other suggestions? Cheers
Pressing the delete key doesn't work on all computers - it's not a universal command. Turn on your computer, and try pressing (and keep tapping) F10 or F2 when the company logo appears on the screen (HP, Compaq, Dell etc). That should allow you to enter the CMOS Setup utility. Now, every setup program is different, so I can't tell you exactly where you need to go. However, you should look around for a few options that say 'Enable PS/2 Mouse= Yes/no' and 'Enable PS/2 Keyboard= Yes/No'. You need to make sure that both items are set to YES. Have a look for similar settings that say 'Enable USB Mouse' and 'Enable USB Keyboard'. Make sure these (if present) are disabled as they could be interfering with your PS/2 hardware
Could it possibly be a problem with the mobo? If it is a USB mouse dont use it. When I ran windows 98SE I plugged in a USB mouse and the system was screwed. I had a keyboard still though at least
Hi everyone I fixed it! I decided to take the mouse cable out, because the keyboard kept flickering, I wondered if that wasn't the problem. When I took the mouse cable out, the keyboard worked enough to get me into BIOS and I enabled the PS/2 mouse and now its all sorted. Thanks everyone for being so helpful. Willow
