HELP, Neither vista or xp recognises my Sata Hard drive

G'day, and thank you for even reading this



Help, I've bought a Western Digital WD5000AAKS, WD Caviar SE16(Black) 500Gb Sata Hard drive,Still has warrenty I think( it has the standard COnnection( Sata Power,-,Serial Data,-,Jumper Setting, from left to right)
My system is Asus M2N-E(2.6 Dual Core, 2x1gb DDR2,Everything is virtually new)
(I just hope this info helps :confused: )
Well anyway, as usual I've used a brand new(out of packet) Stock Sata Cable attached it to port 1 on my motherboard(also tried it on all other ports), powered on and booted up, logged on, checked my computer, and the drive dosn't show(neither does it in the tools under administrative tools), but during boot up and boot set up it shows nothing(not even any text) next to the connectin number
EX;
Sata 3: (Nothing See)
PLEASE HELP ME, IM RUNNING VISTA HOME BASIC BUT DOWNGRADING TO XP PRO, DO I NEED TO INSTALL SOME DRIVER OF ANY SORT AND/OR HOW:confused::confused::confused:
(Im on the verge of throwing this HDD in the Op-SHop Bin)

I forgot to say but so for the Western Digital Support(yeah right) team have been useless so far, and I tried to use the drive with Windows performance edition, if you need any more info(even what my favourite colour is) ask me <(-_-)> ( It's Supposed to be Yoda :D:D:D)
 
Ok, well the only Windows XP that recognizes SATA drives without using a driver is Media Center. If you are not using Media Center, you'll have to get the appropriate drive from WD. I had difficulty finding this driver, maybe it'd help for you to call WD and ask where you can get a hold of it.

Are you sure the drive is recognizing? Have you went into the BIOS and checked to see if the drive shows up in there? If it does feel free to download and burn to disc the following program:

WD Support > Downloads > SATA Hard Drives > WD Caviar Blue / SE / SE16 (SATA II)

If you run it at boot, you can test your hdd for failure. However, this is extremely unlikely due to it being a brand new drive. The primary concern is if it is recognizing in the first place.

And you said the drive is not recognizing in Vista? Are you trying to install the OS in on the drive that is not recognizing, or are you saying, for example, that you put the drive in as a secondary and you can't see it under my computer? New drives have to be formatted to show up in my computer(but it looks like you didn't see it under admin tools?)

You can try different SATA ports on the motherboard, which may help... the primary concern is that I've never seen Vista not recognize a SATA hdd, so if it is not showing up, it seems likely that there is something wrong with either the hdd, sata cable, BIOS, or motherboard.
 
Sorry for a very late reply, i listened to the HDD when it powers up, but it sounds like it's skipping, something is scrape-ing on the actual disk I think(accordidng to the sound) and the disk kinda speeds-up and the slows-down and well then it just stops completely and the controller cools down( if you want i can record it powering up and send it to you) and thank you so very much for finding the driver on the western digital site, Im gonna install xp tonight and hopefully it will work:)
