help setting up my cheap microphone

i bought a cheap microphone 4 the kids to screw around on.(u know kids). my problem is this: when i do the test the microphone, there is no voice recognition.i had a friend that had to press a key on the keyboard. what do i do? :stupid:

This sounds like more of a software question than a hardware one. What software are you trying to set up?
