I'm currently trying to upgrade my computer which uses a MSI K9VGM-V Motherboard. I tried to intall 2 gigs of ram but one of the dimms seems to be defective. I tried different memory sticks and all I get when I try to turn on the computer is a series of long beeps. When I remove the memory from the bad Dimm the computer boots up fine and says overclocking failed. I've had the motherboard for over a year now so returning it is out of the question. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how to fix this problem. I can buy a whole new motherboard but I don't understand why a dimm DIMM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that hasn't been used before is defective.

If you have custom control over your BIOS, (if you bought it and it came in a box) I suggest either returning the settings to normal or lowering the voltage to your ram to that which is specified on your DIMMS.

-Could also, possibly, be timings and frequency... (you probably already thought of that though)
