i am finding that on some games, namely HL2, that after playing for an hour, games freeze up and i get a high pitched tone. i then have to reboot. any ideas would be welcome. no other evidence of any overheating
    i am using a feforce 6800gt, athlon2.8, 750 mb ddr 400 ram

Sounds like you're CPU is overheating. Make sure you've got good airflow through the system. Check that your CPU heatsink is installed properly as well. You may also not have a heatsink that can handle your CPU's heat output, and in that case, you'll want to grab a more capable one.

If you've oced your graphics card then it could be thats overheating aswell. I've not known AXPs to cause the computer to crash as they can handle around 60c and usually it will only hit 55 or so.

Is that during a game session or when you are doing nothing on the computer? I'd try to get it under 50 - 55 when underload.

40c is a bit too high for idle. It should be more or less 30-35 on air. Check that you've put some quality thermal compound on like arctic silver and that your HSF is generally clean and smooth to aid heat transfer.
