Last night I was playing HL2 on steam and it locked up so I hit the power button to restart it and when it booted up it went to an error page that said " unmountable boot volume " . I tried safe mode and a couple other things but it just keeps going to that error page . It says something about preventing damage to the pc and so on . I need some quick help please ! I am running xp with an azus a8ne mobo and 1gig of corsair ram . What other info is needed ?
    Thanks in advance . -A

    Do you need [link=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555302]Microsoft Assistance?[/link]
There is a solution in the link provided from Microsoft, check it.

Thank you . Which problem do you think I am experiencing ? If it was the hardware cable wouldnt it most likely have surfaced earlier ? -A

You dont need a XP CD for the system restore. You will find that in
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools, over here.
Click on it and select the previous working time, when your computer was working properly.

    SYMPTOMS
When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume".

    CAUSE
1.The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.
2.You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.
3.The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.

    RESOLUTION
If it be the connector cable problem then replace the 40-wire cable with an 80-wire UDMA cable.
If it's a BIOS settings problem then load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings, and then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB Support.

If it's a damaged file system case then:-
1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. (So, this is your case and you dont have a XP cd now.)

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.

2.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

3.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.

4.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

5.At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER.

6.At the command prompt, type exit , and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

I dont think so that if you are left with any other choice. You have to get a XP cd from somewhere now.

Your hard disk has failed i'm afraid. Even if you are lucky to get your computer up and running again, I recommend you buy a new hard drive.

Without a Windows XP CD, there is not much you can do.

Pop over to Bootdisk.Com and download the Windows XP boot floppy. You should be able to load chkdsk /f from that.

That question divides a lot of opinion on this forum :D

I am going to say Maxtor produce some of the best hard drives. But I am pretty sure the next member who posts here will say the opposite!

Generally speaking though, Maxtor, Seagate and Western Digital are good choices.

Try to stay clear of Generic brands and general PC manufacture branded drives such as Compaq and HP

Thats wrong because there are so many technical guys over here and each one has its own point of view for watching everything. From which most of the part is common but there are few things which they think differently as well. If he recommended a samsung drive to you then it means it is good and you might be one of the 10000 unlikiest person.
Nobody can gaurantee the life of HDD, it can be damage anytime. Sometimes its because of your faults as well, eg if you havnt given proper earth to your computer. Big B will elaborate it further.

If you have bought a new HDD then you must have a warranty on it. Just replace it and see the life of it.

Does your computer detects that HDD? How far you can go with your HDD? You can even use some data recovery softwares to recover the data.

So you can boot into Windows using your SATA drive?

Well plug in the corrupt drive alongside your SATA drive and see if it appears under 'My Computer'.

You could try fixing it by doing the following:

    1. Open up a command prompt (DOS box)
    2. Type:
      Code:
      chkdsk /f D:

Hint: I am assuming that your old drive will be labeled D:\. If not, just type E:\, F:\ or whatever it is currently assigned as.
