How do I make sure?

A colleague of mine is selling a laptop for very cheap. When I asked her to give me the proof of purchase, she said "I bought this laptop from another country and I dont have a recipt now". If I look at the specs and compare with the price, its very low.
Is there any way, I can check through the windows or any mark or anything like that.
Please help me as soon as possible because if its legal, I dont want to lose this deal.
 
You could ring the manufacturer and give them the serial number.
With this, they may be able to track it for you or give a rough
idea where it was shipped to.
 
I would buy it either way! I doubt the police follow up on a stolen laptop. Well they wouldnt here anyway!

Windows generates a serial number based on the entered product key. The serial number is the one seen when you right click on My Computer. (properties/ registered to....)

I cant remember or find the list of dodgy serial numbers. Its along the lines of "if your serial number begins with **** and ends with ** then its a copied copy!" (you know what I mean)

All laptops will have a restore disk which I would imagine most people keep safe. If its not stolen Id expect this disk. Not always the case but its some indication as to the origin of the installed software.
 
I'd buy it! My laptop cost £50, and I don't have a reciept for it but I know it wasn't nicked (I was with my uncle when he bought it from Tescos originally).
 
She said, Laptop is sealed, new and not even opened yet. So, here I believe that its the stolen one. The original cost is $3800NZC and she is selling for $800NZC to me. It has got XPP, 80GB, 1.8Ghz, Wireless 802.11abg, bluetooth, DVD rw, 512Mb of ram and couple of more things as well.
