how do i work out how many hard drives my pc can support?

Hi all

I have an Athlon 64 X2 with a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 Serial ATA 300GB Hard Drive. I want to install another large storage drive (500gb) and another smaller drive to backup important files, and the possibly another large storage drive at a later date.

how do i work out how many internal drives my pc can actually support?

Welcome to HWF :)

This depends on how many SATA controllers you have. Every SATA controller (SATA port) supports 1 device. If you can't add more internal harddisks, you could eventually buy external harddisks.

not necessarily, a SATA controller typically have a set number of SATA ports that can each have only 1 device connected to it & If you use all available SATA ports on your specific controller you can add a PCI SATA controller to enable you to add more SATA ports & devices

theoretically you can have an unlimited number of HDD connected to any number or SATA of IDE controllers
 
It depends on how SATA connection your motherboard holds and and how many slots your case has. You can install PCI cards for even more, and if you really want to go crazy wit sorage fill all of your USB ports with externals

I will suggest u should go with a storage server if thats the case
 
It depends on number of your SATA controllers.. Each sata controller supports only one device at a time. You can buy another external harddisk instead of internal...
