How hot is too hot?

I have an older gateway laptop they gets rather hot it even smells hot to me
The bottom side gets hotter then I prefer my coffee.

I checked the bios for fan clocking speeds and nothing is adjustable. And the settings it has seem correct

I have made sure it has decent air flow, but it does not seem to help.
As far as I can see it is fairly dust free.

Is it actually the laptop that is getting hot (ie the area around RAM or video card)? In my experience, a lot of the time when people think their laptop is getting hot, it is actually their battery. Well, I can't remember the name of the device, but you should get one of those little stands for your laptop that has fans underneath. This is especially true and unobtrusive if you dont go a lot of places with the laptop. But by the description of how hot your laptop gets, I would say it is definetly a problem. Be sure to double check and see if you have all areas clean of dust and debris and if you have the means, I would make sure all of the fans are operating at full functionality.

Check on the laptops manufactorers website, sometimes they provide a program to moniter and adjust clock speed that will run on the fly on windows.
